On clear photos of raw or sanded wood, Grainwise usually gives a strong match. Finishes, paint, blur and look-alike species (for example hard and soft maple) make it harder; then the app shows its confidence honestly and suggests a better photo. Identifications are AI estimates: confirm with a professional before buying, selling or structural use.
47 common woods from North America, Europe and the tropics. If your wood is most likely outside that list, Grainwise tells you it may be a wood it doesn’t cover yet instead of guessing.
Your scans stay on your phone. To identify a wood, the photo is sent, with your permission, to our AI provider (Anthropic) and is not used to train AI. Details are in the privacy policy.
